Create booties, toys, and blankets to donate to Newborns in Need!

Here you will find digitized patterns that many of our chapters use. We also supply links to websites where other patterns and tutorials are available that some of our chapter utilize.

We generally have a lot of hats at any given time because they are so easy and quick to make but we appreciate them! We don’t get as many donations of booties, toys, or blankets and we could really use those as well.

Please note:

  • Many hospitals do NOT accept items that have been exposed to smoke and/or pet dander. Keep your crafting materials stored in areas your pets can’t access.
  • Avoid using wool or wool-blended yarns and fabrics. It is a common allergen.

Newborns In Need is very grateful for all of the handcrafted baby items that you take the time to make and donate.

Bev’s Easy Round Hat
This pattern has instructions for preemie to newborn.

Preemie “Plum” Hat
Plum hat would fit a 1-lb preemie.

Pop Top Preemie Hat
This is a crocheted version of the Petal Hat knit pattern. Made for NICU babies with monitors attached to their heads.

Ventilator Bonnet
Preemie ventilator bonnet with flap to be used in the NICU.

Beautiful Diaper Bag
This tutorial is for a diaper bag that features a side pocket and uses polyurethane laminate (PUL) as a lining. If you’re unfamiliar with using PUL, they link to another tutorial for tips (such as using 100% polyester thread instead of cotton/blend thread).

Drawstring Bag

NICU-Friendly Smocks
A fabulous tutorial for making flannel smocks for the NICU. It allows room for the various tubes/monitors but is fast and easy to remove if/when necessary. You can use plastic snaps in place of the velcro. (Don’t use metal snaps, as they can get hot in the incubators and burn baby’s skin.) A download link is provided on this page to obtain the free pattern.
